# How to Keep the Cost of Running Your Swim Spa Low

A swim spa brings swimming, exercise and relaxation into your everyday routine. With a few sensible adjustments, you can enjoy those benefits while keeping running costs under control.

Owning a swim spa is about more than running costs. It is about having somewhere to exercise, unwind and spend time together, right at home. Making a few practical adjustments helps you enjoy those benefits while getting the best value from your swim spa.

At Take Wellness, we recommend starting with the temperature, cover, heating schedule and regular maintenance. Together, these help you retain heat, use energy effectively and avoid unnecessary expense.

### Find your ideal swimming temperature

Setting your swim spa to suit your favourite activities helps you enjoy every session while keeping energy use efficient. For swimming and exercise, **28°C to 30°C is a useful starting point**, with room to adjust for your comfort and activity level.

Finding the right temperature for your routine means you can enjoy comfortable swimming while managing heating costs throughout the year.

Keep the cover fitted and secured

A good cover is one of the most important parts of an efficient swim spa. Much of the heat loss occurs from above, making a properly fitting cover essential for heat retention.

Whenever your swim spa is not in use, replace the cover fully and secure the clips as instructed. Check that each section sits correctly, including the centre joins, without obvious gaps. Inspect the cover regularly for damage, poor fit or waterlogging. Aim for a snug, effective seal rather than trying to make the swim spa completely airtight or modifying its ventilation.

## Make the most of cheaper electricity

Heating during cheaper tariff periods can reduce the amount you pay for electricity. However, **electricity is only cheaper overnight if your tariff offers a lower night rate**. Smart Energy GB makes this distinction clear.

Where your swim spa controls allow it, schedule routine heating around the exact cheaper hours offered by your supplier. Allow enough time to reach your chosen temperature before use. Use the built in settings rather than switching off the entire electricity supply. Filtration, water treatment and frost protection must continue to operate as required by the manufacturer.

### Find an electricity tariff that works for you

The right electricity tariff can help you get more enjoyment from your swim spa for less. Ask your supplier about options that suit your routine, including tariffs offering cheaper electricity during certain hours.

Compare the daytime rate, cheaper periods, standing charge and any exit fees to find the best overall value for your home. Scheduling swim spa heating around lower rates, where your controls allow, could help you make a useful saving.

Consider a heat pump

An air source heat pump transfers heat from the surrounding air into the water. It can provide more heat energy than the electricity it consumes, helping reduce heating electricity use compared with a conventional electric resistance heater.

Performance depends on outdoor temperature, water temperature and operating conditions. The official Poolex Ice Spa specifications illustrate how both heating output and efficiency change as conditions become colder.

At Take Wellness, we can advise on a suitable heat pump for your swim spa, taking account of water volume, insulation, location and use throughout the year.

## Shower before getting in

A quick shower helps keep sweat, cosmetics and other contaminants out of the water.

BISHTA confirms that these substances can affect water treatment and clog filters. Reducing contamination helps make water care more manageable and may avoid unnecessary corrective treatment. **It does not replace regular testing, sanitising or the recommended filtration schedule.**

## Keep up with maintenance

Clean and replace filters according to the product instructions, maintain the correct water balance and arrange servicing when required. BISHTA advises that regular maintenance helps keep a swim spa in good working order and can save time and money.

It is also worth tracking electricity consumption before and after changing settings. Compare similar periods of weather and use, so you can judge which adjustments make a meaningful difference.

### Your swim spa efficiency checklist

☐ Choose a comfortable temperature for swimming and exercise
☐ Fit the cover fully and secure the clips after every use
☐ Check the cover for gaps, damage or waterlogging
☐ Schedule heating around cheaper electricity hours where suitable
☐ Compare electricity tariffs for the best overall value
☐ Ask about a suitable heat pump
☐ Shower before getting in
☐ Clean filters and maintain the correct water balance
☐ Keep filtration and frost protection operating as instructed
☐ Track electricity use to see what works for you
