How To Look After Your Chill Tub

Keep Your Water Crystal Clear for the Best Contrast Experience

For the best cold-therapy experience, your goal should always be clean, clear water.

Outdoor chill baths naturally go cloudy faster than indoor setups due to sunlight, temperature changes, pollen, rainwater, and everyday debris. That is why a simple maintenance routine makes all the difference. Keeping your plunge hygienic, inviting, and ready whenever you are.

Here is our straightforward guide to keeping your water in top condition.

Rinse Before You Get In (The Biggest Difference)

A quick shower or even a rinse with a hose removes the main contaminants that cause cloudy water:

  • Sweat

  • Body oils

  • Sunlotion

  • Deodorant

This one habit alone dramatically extends water clarity.

Keep Your Bath Covered (Essential Outdoors)

Sunlight and airborne debris are the biggest causes of cloudy or green water. Use a tight-fitting insulated cover and keep it on whenever the bath isn’t in use. This prevents algae growth, keeps debris out, and helps maintain temperature.

Use a Sanitiser (Recommended for Outdoor Baths)

Even cold water needs treatment, low temperatures slow bacteria growth but don’t stop it. Use chlorine (Simple & Effective) and maintain 1–3 ppm free chlorine. Use spa-grade granules or tablets and test regularly with strips.

Tip: Dissolve granules in warm water before adding, never add directly to the bath.

Add Filtration (A Game Changer)

Still water clouds quickly. Circulation helps remove particles and prevents buildup.

Options include:

  • Submersible circulation pump

  • Spa pump and filter

  • Pond filter

  • UV clarifier

Even 30–60 minutes of circulation per day can make a huge difference.

Skim Debris Regularly

Leaves, pollen, insects, and dust quickly break down and feed bacteria. Use a small pool skimmer net daily or before each plunge to keep water fresh.

Clean the Tub Weekly

Clear water can still hide biofilm.

  • Once a week (or depending on usage):

  • Drain if needed

  • Scrub walls with diluted vinegar or a spa surface cleaner

  • Rinse thoroughly

  • Regular cleaning prevents sudden cloudiness.

How Often to Change the Water

With sanitiser, cover, and rinsing routine. Every 1–2 weeks without sanitiser. Every 2–3 days outdoors.

Outdoor environments introduce extra variables:

  • UV light encourages algae growth

  • Warmer daytime temperatures accelerate bacteria

  • Organic debris from the air

  • Rainwater diluting water chemistry

  • A consistent routine keeps these factors under control.
