How To Prepare Your Hot Tub For Bad Weather

With wind, snow and very cold weather forecast, now is the time to give your hot tub a little extra care. So it stays safe, efficient and ready for use all winter long. Here are a few basic steps that you can take to help ensure that your hot tub remains in great condition through the winter months:

1. Keep the Water Moving & Heated
Make sure your hot tub stays running during freezing weather. Circulating water prevents the water from freezing and damaging the pipes and equipment, which can cause costly damage. Most modern hot tubs have a 'winter mode' ensure it’s switched on.

2. Maintain a Steady Warm Temperature
Set your hot tub water to a consistent warm temperature (e.g., around 27°C or above). This helps prevent freezing, reduces strain on your heater, and uses less energy than reheating from cold.

3. Secure & Protect the Cover
Your hot tub cover is your first line of defence.
  • Fasten all straps and locks so wind won’t lift it.
  • Check the cover is snug and in good condition.
  • Brush off snow regularly. Heavy snow can damage the cover or compress the insulation.

4. Check Water Levels Often
Cold weather can affect water levels considerably. Low water can harm the pump and heater, so check weekly and top up as needed.

5. Balance Your Water Chemistry
Winter doesn’t mean you can ignore water quality. Test and balance pH, sanitiser and alkalinity regularly, cold conditions can still affect water chemistry.

6. Remove Snow & Ice Gently
Use a soft-bristled brush to clear snow and ice from the cover. Avoid sharp tools or metal shovels that can tear or damage it.

7. Plan for Power Outages (if expected)
If a long outage is likely, consider a backup generator to keep your hot tub running. If that’s not possible, discuss winterisation options with us before the storm hits.

8. Safe Access Around Your Hot Tub
Keep pathways clear of snow and ice so you can safely get to and from your hot tub. Especially important when conditions are slippery.

Winter storms don’t have to mean trouble for your hot tub. A little preparation now will help ensure your spa stays healthy, efficient and ready to use. No matter what the weather throws at it.
