What You Need To Know Before Your Internal Sauna Install

So, you have made the excellent decision to bring sauna-wellness into your home. To make sure your installation goes as smooth, safe and stress-free as possible and delivers the full sauna experience. In this guide, we walk you through everything you need to check before install: from delivery access and room size, to electrics, ventilation, flooring and layout. Use it as your go-to pre-install checklist because a little planning now can save a lot of time, hassle and expense later.

Route to Location & Site Access — Can We Get the Sauna In?

Even though you already own the sauna, it still needs to physically reach its final position in your home. Ensuring proper access now prevents tricky situations on install day:

  • Measure all access points: doorways, hallways, staircases, corners, all the way from delivery van to the installation room. Sauna pods and kits can be bulky, so tight spaces or narrow turns might cause problems.

  • Ensure you have a staging / assembly area: ideally on a flat, level, moisture-resistant floor concrete, tile or similar surfaces are best. Avoid carpets, uneven surfaces or floors with slopes.

  • Check vertical clearance and ceiling height: make sure there’s enough headroom for the sauna structure, including the roof, benches and heater clearance. Sauna kits require clearances as part of the installation safety requirements.

  • Leave enough room around the sauna footprint: to assemble and move panels/heater safely, and to allow for ventilation and maintenance access once installed.

Pro tip: Walk the exact route with a tape measure, checking width and height. If you hesitate or have to manoeuvre awkwardly, contact us before installation so we can plan accordingly.

Electrical Readiness — Power & Safety Must Be Prepped in Advance

Sauna heaters (especially traditional or high-power electric heaters) demand careful electrical planning. Before we arrive:

  • Ensure you have a dedicated circuit with sufficient capacity: Most home saunas require a dedicated circuit — not shared with other appliances. Shared circuits often lead to overloads or tripped breakers.

  • Wire sizing must match heater wattage / amperage requirements: Undersized wiring poses overheating and fire risks. It’s essential to have properly sized wiring, breaker and grounding, in line with the heater’s specifications.

  • Use a qualified electrician: Comply with local regulations before sauna wiring / hard-wiring. Sauna heater installation is not a DIY plug-and-play job in most cases.

  • No standard plug sockets inside the sauna room: Especially for high-wattage heaters. All electrics should be installed following sauna-specific guidelines.

If your electrical panel is already near capacity, it is worth addressing this before assembly. avoiding delays on installation day and ensuring safe, reliable sauna operation.

Ventilation & Moisture Management — Healthy Air & Long-Term Durability

Proper ventilation is vital for comfort, safety, and preventing long-term damage:

  • Plan for fresh-air intake and exhaust vents: Generally, an intake vent near the heater and an exhaust vent near the ceiling (or on the opposite wall) helps maintain airflow and removes humidity efficiently.

  • Ensure surrounding walls/floor are moisture-resistant: Sauna heat and steam can create humidity — especially if ventilation is insufficient. Moisture-resistant flooring and wall finishes (or appropriate vapor barriers) are strongly recommended.

  • Avoid installing on carpet or untreated wooden floors: These surfaces are vulnerable to heat and moisture damage. Instead, use tile, sealed concrete, vinyl or other sauna-suitable surfaces.

  • Make sure door and room layout allow proper air circulation — including a gap under the door if required, and clear paths for airflow.

Good ventilation isn’t optional, without it, you risk moisture problems, poor heating performance, and potential damage to surrounding structure.
